Everyone.net Unveils Email Fingerprint, Industry’s First
Fix for Spam “Bounce Storm” Threats
Updated email service with integrated anti–virus and spam
protection lowers cost of providing email.
Washington, DC - ISPCON – April 13, 2004 —
Everyone.net, a global provider of integrated email and anti-spam
services, today announced the launch of Total Protection 2.0, its
enhanced email protection service. The new service implements significant
technical advances such as Email Fingerprint, which provides the industry’s
first fix to a new, highly-destructive type of attack known as a bounce
storm.
Unlike stand-alone anti-spam vendors, Everyone.net combines and integrates
feature-rich email service with sophisticated anti-spam and antivirus
protection. With millions of active mailboxes, more than 30,000 paying
customers, and over 30 million messages processed daily, Everyone.net
aims to protect installed users and appeal to new customers with Total
Protection 2.0. Everyone.net’s integrated approach offers key
benefits:
- Lower overall cost of spam-free email. The old “add-on”
approach used by other vendors that tacks perimeter-protection
onto stand-alone email service usually can’t beat integrated
solutions on price.
- Lower overall complexity of spam-free email. The old “add-on”
approach that asks customers to evaluate, purchase, integrate and
maintain multiple vendors’ packages (email, anti-spam, anti-virus)
usually can’t beat integrated solutions on simplicity and reduced
management burden.
- Innovative techniques to deliver spam-free email. Because
Everyone.net processes all outgoing and inbound messages for customers,
it can implement advanced threat-detection services including today’s
announcement of Email Fingerprint.
- Better user experience. The old “add-on” approach
forces administrators and end users to jump between separate software
packages to set and change settings, or review messages quarantined
in spam folders. Everyone.net offers a single interface and better
workflow.
Aspects of Total Protection 2.0 have been in early trial with Everyone.net’s
customers including Wolfgang Puck, California State University Channel
Islands, and large ISPs who private-label the offering for their own
customers. Everyone.net offers customizable packages for organizations,
ISPs and personal email accounts.
Total Protection 2.0 New Features
Total Protection 2.0 focuses on pre-emptive protection at the server
level, achieved through engineering new intelligence into Everyone.net’s
mail processing system at multiple functionality layers. Highlights
include:
Email Fingerprint Delivers Industry’s First Bounce-Storm
Protection
This new technique blocks emails at the server level that purport
to notify users of ‘bounced’ or ‘infected’
messages that they never sent in the first place. Not just annoying,
with new viruses such as Bagle and Netsky, bounced messages can
spike into the thousands or millions, creating a “bounce storm”
that takes down servers and email service.
Email Fingerprint blocks bounce storms by assigning every outbound
email a uniquely-identifying code. When bounced messages hit Everyone.net
servers, software looks for the code marker and only passes through
those messages that legitimately originated from the sender.
“It’s like a thumb scan for email messages,”
says Everyone.net CTO Wayne Lewis. “We’re keeping a
lot of servers up and untouched by bounce storms with this tool.”
Folder Janitor Mops up After Spam Floods
This new feature recognizes and intelligently handles spam floods
that can exceed even ample mailbox storage allotments. A spam flood
can result in the loss of legitimate messages due to folder overflow.
Behind the scenes, Everyone.net’s Folder Janitor automatically
deletes old spam messages according to user preferences if users’
mailboxes become overwhelmed storing incoming spam.
Advanced Rules Engine Enables “Pre-Processed”
Mail
Using an advanced rules engine, Everyone.net’s servers continuously
sort email based on users’ customized settings, so users with
an IMAP desktop application start their session with email pre-sorted
into correct folders. This saves time in each instance of checking
email.
Enhanced Perimeter Protection
This advanced architecture creates an extended buffer zone between
Everyone.net servers and the Internet, allowing Everyone.net to
absorb severe spikes in traffic and messaging requirements that
occur when new viruses or spam break out. Users benefit because
it enables Everyone.net to maintain industry-leading uptime at lower
costs, thus keeping prices among the most competitive in the industry.
